Looks like there's some open minded people over at Philips (the electronics company). They have posted a new section in there concept / design area called "SKIN:Tattoo".
http://www.design.philips.com/probes/projects/tattoo/index.page - Philips Electronic SKIN:Tattoo Video / website
The general premise is that you have some type of electronic ink / blood pathogen(?) under your skin that reacts to various stimuli across your skin. This is my guess on the workings, as it's not described in theory anywhere. But the jist is that you turn your skin into a multi-touch, nerve reacting LCD screen that dynamically draws out tattoos on your skin to match the stimulus.
There's a video on the page that gives a better overview of the idea. Even though it looks like bad softcore emo porn, it shows off the concept well.
So, who would want to get this done? Me? Hell yes. Would I do it over my entire body? I think it's a little late for that. Would I farm out my skin for some beta testing? Hell no. Would t3chdzyn farm his skin out for beta testing... I bet he would.
Now that you know of this new concept, would you do it? It what ways would you improve upon this idea?

Now that is DAMN cool. I'd need to know more before I'd decide whether to be a beta tester, but depending on what's actually in the ink... Hell yeah, I'd do that!

Something about the words 'blood pathogen' is mildly freaking me out ;) Sounds interesting...but no way would I volunteer myself as a beta tester!

When you look at the kind of thing that's placed into the human body these days, depending on the pathogen it wouldn't necessarily be such a bad thing.
I couldn't tell if they were talking about the tattoo reacting to something injected into the bloodstream or using the body's natural chemical changes to bring the tattoo out. I could see both of them working, but the second seems more predictable.
If that's the case though, a moko migh be a bad idea... just imagine what would happen to my poker face!

that would be amazing to have tattoos "come to life" with a stroke across your skin. the concept is very exciting indeed!

I would be the first in line to try this out. As for improvement, I would say that a mood-sensitive version would be great. No one would ever piss you off if it resulted in demonic and dynamic tattoos appearing all over your face ;)

I just watched the video and it made no sense what so ever... recon I'd probably let them try this on me...it'd be cool...just curious as to how they get the ink to travel an how to shape an stuf surely it must be preprogramed...and color an shades...I well want to see this idea come through properly...

There isn't much information though exactly on the process of inserting this technology into people. I wonder when and how you become a beta tester.

So I did some research, and the only way I can find to get more information is sending a letter to the head of their "Consumer Lifestyle" division in the Netherlands.
The other thing about this project, and the rest on that section of the website, is that they're "far-future" projects, things that they don't expect will be marketable (or in some cases developed) until 2020. Still, I'm sure they're going to need beta testers, so maybe one of us could get in for that.
Anyone else get any more info about the project?

You know, it just goes to show that people are forever thinking of ways to express themselves. I think it is great that Phillips has decided to enter into the field of body modification. I realize that this is just a concept and that they will be doing much more testing before they reach a final product. But it has spiked my intrest very much, and if they get this nailed down, I would love to do it.

i don't know...... it's not convincing to me.
who decides on what images will appear? will it always be one out of a defined choice? and will it be affected by the mood?
to me it sounds as scarily exposing as the daemons in the His Dark Materials trilogy [by Philip Pullman].
i'm not sure i'd go for it.

Ya know, the pessimistic in me got thinking. It probably wouldn't be long before someone figures out how to "hack" into the electronic tattoo against the owner's will or knowledge and turn the owner's body into a walking billboard for commercial or monetary gains. Wouldn't that just suck.

oh wow that is pretty fking beautiful =] i doubt it'd even be ready and bug-free by 2020, but i'd definitely do it when it is! does anyone know if it simply makes the pattern appear when your mood changes, or if its possible to move and change shapes like in the vid?
i just hope i won't make that creepy clicking noise everytime someone touches me.

The idea is interesting and sounds like it would be an alternative to the standard ink process.
Next up will probably be some specific light bandwidth tattoos. I imagine these would magically "appear" on the skin under the correct lighting conditions.

awesome! it's a really great idea! i've got lots of free space left on my body, so i'd be a good tester but they have to edit the sound... it sounds awful! imagine you're sitting somewhere, feeling attracted to someone passing your way, the ink reacts and creates cute patterns and you sound like a woodworm eating a tree

Henk Schiffmacher is the most well known Dutch Tattoo artist, I'm thinking if he's in on the concept, it almost has to be reliable. Plus Phillips is a honest and progressive company. And I live in the Netherlands, so that leaves me with little options :)
so, hell yeah! id get it done, sign me up for beta testing!

I would be more interested in knowing whether or not you could change what is displayed & when it shows up. Could you play video on your skin? Imagine having a device you strap on your wrist, part of your arm turns black for a moment & then picture (not sound) is coming out of your arm! Think of how many teens would want it. Crap, I want it! Give me your micro machines!
But seriously the potential is amazing & I would so beta test it.

tattoos sort of looses its charm with this electronic skin thing.. don't know anything about this but i could imagine not much pain is involved and no visibility unless you want it.
if you ask me, thats what tattoos are all about; the commitment and pain behind a tattoo.
but i always bid the technology welcome and it does sound pretty exciting...

I would do it if I was cetain they could repair any damage done to my person. I wonder if they cna make it have colors insted of just black. They would probably have to insert a device in your brain so that you could "turn it on." I wouldnt want it i you abosolutly had to touch your skin for it to work, cause I can't draw for shit. The idea is really amazing, think about it, if you saw somehting and had a good eye you could copy somthibg you have seen EXACTLY. I woul sign up seeing as I currently have no tattoos.

Wow, what an amazing concept! I think at the moment that this technology would be very limited, as the way i see it the 'ink' would only be able to react to a certain stimilus, most likely biochemical, and become visible or change colour. I think this is a long way off having tattoos that can change pictorally to suit moods, but who knows! Perhaps chameleon-like changing to suit emotion could be possible, although personally i find going red is enough in embarrasing situations, let alone green or purple! Has Von Cyborg not signed up for this already!?
