Why did you get that tattoo??

Interested in your stories and not because you 'just like the picture'.

What was the motivation behind it?

in my case, i, for some reason, believed my ex boyfriend/ex tattoo artist actually designed the tribal glyphs i had done from his own head.

I picked them because they were different, and because they meant something to me, since i helped him name them, and pick meanings, etc. We sat down and chose meanings that fit my personality and past and who i am.

Then, after we break up, one day, years later, i pick up a book in my store where i was working and i see that he directly ripped off all the concepts from a preestablished set of ideas.  I was pissed.

Now i'm covered in rip off work.  I will keep the general concept, but i will elaborate upon it with original (from MY OWN head) ideas.  I still like what i have, but be careful when someone tells you something is original, they might be lying.

Like you said you can always add to them. Shame he lied to you. Gotta hate that. Interested in how you named them and how you gave them meaning??  I have small filigree work on me that a friend and I designed, and each line represents movements, life journey, coming and going..to others it seems like a doodle.

i wanted to remind myself of what was important in life. the three chinese characters (love, energy, and eternity) are literal, meaning compassion and goodness and the good in the world and how we are all part of something bigger, neverending, undying...

the star is to remind myself of the celestial- something very spiritual to me. the hot rod flames are an icon of an elemental thing... besides i like cars so thats what i did. since i got it with my girlfriend i had love as the tallest thing.

I have a tat of a tribal phoenix on my back. Just incase anyone reading this doesn't know the myth, the phoenix is a bird that is consumed by fire each night, and rises from the ashes each morning. The way I see it, the phoenix is either a torture victim kept alive by the cruelty of the universe...or a survivor. Either way, my life hasn't exactly been sunshine and cookies and the way I see it I might as well be the phoenix. That and I thought it was pretty

I have quite a few tattoos, each with their own meanings. They mostly symbolize me as a person, or my personality. I won't list them all, but I'll name a few of them.

I have a Tribal Dragon, designed by a friend of mine. As for symbolism and meaning, it symbolizes my inner being. As for meaning, it shows that I'm not afraid to search for that which I desire.

I have a tattoo of a Fairy with Tribal. It's symbolic of a friend of mine, whose trademark is a fairy. As for meaning, it means that I care about my friends. the friend it symbolizes, was only blocks away on September 11, and I had feared that they were gone when I didn't hear from them for close to a month.

I have a tattoo of Tigger. The symbolism and meaning are much the same. Tigger is like me, he never goes in search of trouble, but he always ends up there. It also shows that I'm a kid at heart.

My Green Goblin tattoo symbolizes my thoughts of revenge. It also has the meaning of being different.

Most importantly, to me at least is my IWasCured tattoo. For those who have never heard of them, IWasCured is a suspension team located in Toronto, Ontario. I have performed a pull and 2 suspensions with their assistance. The tattoo symbolizes my appreciation of all that they have done to assist me in my spiritual journey, and learning of my ancestral past. It is a constant reminder of how far I have come as a person.

my first and only tat is a peace sign on my wrist.

it was taken from a necklace my mother gave me. which isnt actually a necklace. its a metal peace sign on a piece of ribbon.

the peace sign was orginally on a pair of sandels that my father wore in the 70s

its groovyyyy and very special. it links my father and me. also since he and i are the only people in the family with any tats

Hmm ... I haven't got any tat's done yet (so why the hell am I replying? ...) Anyway .. What I had in mind is to have a Triquetra on my wrist; standing for me and my sisters. We all like the sign, and to me it's kinda special because of the meaning. I'm also planning on taking 3 stars on my back, just between my shoulders. Each start symbolizing a person; also me and my sisters. Maybe it isn't original, but I don't have them yet anyway ;) And to me they mean something, so ...

As with many of the others my tats symbolize different things from my past and personality. I have a tribal design that has a lot of spikes coming out of it, and I had that one done at a time when I didnīt quite knew what I wanted to do with my life, then when I found out I had a new tribal done where all the ends point in the same direction. Then I have one on my arm that says "What do you want from me" and that is a sort os exorcism, coz I used to hook up with girls who said they wanted me, but tried to change me. It was kinda confusing never knowing what they wanted, so by putting the words into my arm I got them outta my head and it worked like a charm

Everything about my tat is symbolic in some way.  It's permanent, representing my life-long devotion to Jesus and God.  It's a Celtic cross with a triquetra and Jesus fish.  I designed it 6 1/2 years ago when I was in the ninth grade and wanted to get it inked ever since I designed it.  My parents told me to wait a few years and see if I still wanted it.  When I turned 19 I took the plunge and got it.  To me, there's no point getting a tattoo off of a wall that means nothing.  I'm not knocking it, but just my personal opinion.

Finding a meaning in a tattoo for me differs, i might have felt differently when i got the tattoo, and as time progressed the meaning changed.

The tribal ying yang on my wrist: I got it when i was travelling the U.K., fell in love with a girl, girl ends up with best friend... I designed the tattoo the day i found out about them, mostly out of anger and saddness, the tattoo meant at "that" stage in my life to never give up to keep on fighting and to basically be very coutios of every one i meet, NOW well the tattoo has taken on a different meaning, i see it as hope that no situation can ever be 100% bad, nor 100% good there will always be some bad or good in the situation. If i take above mentioned story : The situation wasnt 100% bad for me it tought me a valuable life lesson which would make up the 10% good.

i have the korean word "pil sung" on my right shoulder.  it means personal victory in english.  i had it done the day i tested(and passed) for my black belt.  i did it because i had blown my knee when i was praticing for this very same test.  i had knee surgery, followed by 6 months of physical therapy.  yhen it took 3 months of practice before i felt comfortable enough to take the test.  then i broke my hand while breaking a board during the test.  i feel that i really earned the belt and the tatoo!
