Hi there.  All I can tell you is that I am just gauging mine a little currently.  I am going to a 10g and then possibly an 8 down the road if I am feeling it.  That was my thinking too.  Honestly, I don't know if they will shrink back down, but a 10g for me isn't too bad at all.  I have some little 14g in there now and just bought tapers to do the rest.  My work already has enough problems with my nose piercing...UGH!

(stretching not gauging)
I had mine at a 6ga, and due to an infection I had to take one out...it closed up in a few days.  I want to say that 0ga or 00ga is the point of no return...but I could be wrong...

ITS STRETCHIIIING!!! AARGHH!! gauging is a ridiculous word. people said 6g-4g,is the point of no return or even 0g like mentioned up there but i'm not sure bout that. it depends on one's regenerative process.

I think that generally, once it's at 4g or above and healed, they'll stay that way. I had mine that size for three years, whilst wearing no proper jewellery in it. When I finally decided I wanted the jewellery in, it just popped in brilliantly.

But then it's all down to speculation. Everyone's different.

I had my lobes at 7/16 (just over 11mm) with no jewellery in for 3, maybe 4 years, and they didn't close up a tiny bit. I think you have to see it as permanent if you go past 5mm.

Ok...so the OP and I said gauging.  The person who replied after me corrected us.  Why is there a need to make the post about the difference btwn stretching and gauging now?  Half of the people have helped answer the question and half of the people are going off on something that was caught and corrected.  Let it go.

A couple years ago I decided to try and get my ears back to "regular earring size" from 0g, and it actually shrink back to about 16g which allowed me to wear post earrings.

Funny thing is I got sick of wearing regular earrings and stretched back up to 00g.

It's a common mistake. But I'm pretty sure Montana was just letting you know the differences so you KNEW the correct terminology for what you are doing. It's not to put you down, but to educate you. I don't know why you felt the need to defend yourself?

edit: ps, as long as you stretch properly, you should be able to shrink back down. you may not be able to get back to the original size (depending on what gauge you plan on stretching to) but since you aren't stretching too much bigger than your ears are now, I think you should be okay. Good luck :)

If you're worried about them not going back down, don't stretch. When you're modifying your body, you need to think on a permanent level.

And its stretching, not gauging :p

As many have said, stretching not gauging. Usually depends on the person with downsizing. I had mine at 1/2", then decided to remove my jewelery for a week. They closed to a 14g, and could have gone further. I'm at 1/2" again. Anyways, as MrDahmer said - think on a permanent level.

stretching your ears can be addicting, thats something I know for sure.
When I first started doing mine I said i was only gonna goto a 2 or something. now i'm at 3/4ths. :D

Not sure at what point they wont go back.. but if your pretty worried about that I wouldn't go that big at all. I know for sure my arn't gonna go back to normal.

It is one hundred percent dependent on your body. There are a few things you can do to help them close up. I personally wouldn't reccommend going past 4ga if you were to worried about it. I had my ears dermal punched at a 0ga and kept them in for about 9 mos before taking them out. My ears closed completely.

To add to what others have said about it depending on your body...I have a friend that took her 12ga earrings out like a few years ago & they never closed (as of yet), but like I said earlier, mine closed from 6ga in a few days.  So it really does differ from person to person.

You COULD always do a little experiment to test your own body...

Stretch up to a size that isn't too obvious when you take your jewelry out (like a 10 or an 8, so they look just slightly more noticeable than a standard ear piercing.) and see how long it takes them to shrink back down one or two sizes.

Then, if you decide that it's too slow, or maybe the aren't shrinking back at all, you can stop if you feel the need.

I hope that made sense...

The generally accepted "point of no return" is about 2g, but as said already, everyone is different. If you're looking for non permanent mods, maybe stretching isn't for you?

Edited for senselessness.

My ears are at 0 gauge. And if I remove my plugs for one night, they fully close.. So everyone must be different, as everyone said. But 0g or 00g are probably the point of no return for alot of people.

i just closed my 6G second hole down, its been about a month and i can only put in a 12G now...and my lobes are at 12mm...
it is addicting, my first holes were only going to go to six, but one thing led to another...
it depends on your ears alot, and how MUCH you want them to close over. one day I might downsize, but I don't expect my 12mm to close entirely.
if you're really worried about them closing over, stretch properly, and don't go very big. it depends on the person but 4-2G is probably average

My ears have been at 16mm / 5/8"  for over 18 months now. It sounds a bit odd but if I'm ill and I take them out to clean they can shrink pretty quickly but other times they've been really loose and nearly dropped out. I've never really thought about downsizing unless my lobes got a bit thin, I guess I've gone past the point of no return but it doesn't bother me.

My left ear is at 6MM and I can still wear normal earrings in it if I take my plug out, as long as the front of the earring isn't stupidly tiny.

ive actually went from 1'' to a 14g in a month with no jewelry, it shows that it depends on each person, some people cant close them if its past 2g

I've went from 2ga to 14ga back to 00ga to 14ga tp 1/2" to 14ga and now I'm at 5/8". My friend has also gone from 1/2' to 14ga. I guess it all depends on how well you take care of your ears and how your skin reacts to stretching because I also know someone who went to an 8 and they've left their jewelery out for MONTHS and you can still see through their ears.

The longer you have them at a certain size also affects how quickly they can/will close.

Maybe I'm crazy but i am at 5/8 and sometimes my plugs fall out and when i wake up i feels a little harder to put in =/
