So, my boyfriend works as a temp for a materials testing company. His temp ends December 4th. Being the intelligent person that he is, he has been looking for new jobs to start once the temp ends. He has an interview today. Guess what? He gets fired from his temp job for "taking an interview with a competitor".

WTF!

The company's told him he won't be hired back after the temp position is over because there's no work during the winter. So they fire him for trying to ensure he has a job lined up after the position ends? I don't get it.

Apparently, they are not offering him a severance package, and he has been evicted from the company housing tonight. Yes, they are kicking him out in the middle of the night.

Basically this place is a scam. The "free housing" is run by a slum lord who refuses to pay for maintenance, the workers don't get benefits, and they treat their workers like dirt. And the funny thing is, the owner who hires everyone makes it out to be the best job in the world when he interviews people and visits college career fairs.

So, his parents are driving up from Pennsylvania to take his things out of the house back to their house until he lands a new job, and he's coming up to visit me this weekend, and then driving down to PA to live until he gets a job. I probably won't see him until after Christmas.

We're really hoping he gets one of the two jobs he interviewed for today.

I feel inexplicably upset by all this. Like, he's my boyfriend, not my fiancee or husband or anything. But then I remember that I want to be with him forever, and then it makes sense why I'm so upset.

Oh, and feel free to share outrageous termination stories. :]

all states in the U.S has a labor relation board they help people with things like this have him contract them this might not help him but they will investigate the company and make them stop doing things like this he should go to the unemployment office he should be able to draw unemployment check

Yeah, we're trying to do some research to figure out who to tell to investigate the company. He wants to use them for a reference though, before he whistleblows (oddly, the company usually gives good reviews of their employees).

I hadn't even considered unemployment checks, actually.

there must be an ombudsman of some sort but damn does that suck ..

did he go through an agency or directly through the company?

i'm actually doing temping at the moment and am registered with a few agencies. One agency found me a one month assignment that's full time and when I rang up the other agency to tell them I couldn't work casual hours they said 'good on you for looking after yourself and looking for work' .. but that company that your b/f was with is shite and i'd def be following up on it.

I don't mean "temp" like you mean "temp", I don't think.

He found them at our college's career fair. They hire people in "temp" positions for six months, train them to do the materials testing, and then after that six months is up, they'll either hire you full time or send you packing. However, they explicitly told him that none of the current temps would be hired on full time, as it's almost winter in NY, and people aren't as likely to need soil tested, so he's been hunting for jobs to start after the temp position is up. He didn't go through a temp agency.

Here in the UK it is highly illegal to sack someone for applying for a job elsewhere. I am not sure if the law is the same in the USA but I would expect there must be some kind of say of taking legal action for unfair dismissal.

I'm thinking that unless the contract he signed had a clause in it addressing this, he'll probably pursue it legally.

My grandma died on a Monday, and my ex-boss didn't have anyone to cover my shift + he had to go to rehab (DUI, required) that day, I called and explained the situation, legally I was allowed 3 days off, I got an email with him firing me on the day of her funeral.

Getting fired sucks.

Getting fired for dancing too much is just funny.

Hence why I no longer work at spencer's.

I once got fired for going into work on 6 xanax sticks...All I remember of that day was peeing in not one but several fish tanks, which mind you were in the middle of the store, and eating these bird treat things that were like this honey covered in seed...Really don't ask. Cause I'm not sure lol. Then another time I got fired from the answering service that I was working at for getting stoned. Now mind you I can function pretty well high well at that job anyway. But I'm not talking about a little stoned I mean REALLY REALLY stoned. Talking about smoking an ounce of some really nice g13xhaze in about a day and half at the most and on top of that eating half a tray of reggie brownies that had an ounce thrown into them lol. I was so stoned I sat there and stared at a garbage can and got sent home...Also I was out side smoking j's that were just completely filled out big bambu's. It was probably the highest I've ever been from weed. I then got hired back to that job a month later LOL. Then went in on two separate occasions once on 3 40mg methadose biscuits (honestly still not sure how I didn't die that time lol), and then another time on a quarter ounce of mushrooms both times I actually didn't get fired or sent home for either of those lol. That was strange now that I think about it lol.

That's got to be the most amazing thing on your termination papers. I personally would poster-size them and frame them on my wall as a trophy.

But that's just me. Pleased

I think, by law, that if you call a reference, they cannot say horrible things about you. Besides, while he is interviewing, they will most likely ask why he was fired and if he explains why, the interviewer may not even bother with that reference. Is there someone else he could list as his reference there?

It's possible that he gets fired if he looks for a job on the current company's time; but if it' his personal time, he can do whatever he wants, just what I thought ....

He looks for jobs at night after work. If he has to call people during the day, he calls on his lunch break (which he is not getting paid for, so it's not company time).

Basically the place is full of dickwads who are very manipulative and mislead their employees. He went on an interview the day he was fired (basically what this whole story is about), and he told the interviewer what happened (since he had to explain that he was no longer employed there) and they thought it was whack too.

That is true, but on the other hand, companies have a kind of secret code language that they use to say bad things in nice words.
For example, "he was a very creative employee" usually means that you're chaotic, or always late.

I'm so happy I live in a country where employees have more rights than employers. It's very difficult to fire someone here.
You'll get at least a month's notice, so nobody can put you out in the street just like that, and you need a damn good reason to fire someone.

This means that I never actually got fired - the only time I had to leave a job against my will, was because my contract ended and they didn't want to renew it for some crappy reason.

You know what, it might just have opened an opportunity for your b/f looking for a new job full-time. You or your b/f might not see it now, but it's a good thing that he no longer works for that company. Guess I'm a glass half full kind of gal...:-)

I was "Fired"... ./forced to resign ....because i stood up for the old people being washed in cold water / having food taken away early etc.

I complained and nothing was done.. so i was going to report it.

My manager then accused me of breaking confidentiality and abuse of an old women...... I was then found guilty of abuse and its on my record for 6 mnths. It was done internally and i was not allowed to speak to anyone at work to get statements of proof i was innocent. It was done wrong, i was wronged.

15 months of care work 7 nights most weeks.... taken away
Ruined my life.

I win.

I've been fired too. Frown It was because I didn't want to kiss my bosses' ass and she didn't like that I was earning a salary that she believed to be too much money. Her boss agreed on my pay before I was hired, but she was angry that she was overruled and didn't want me around. She tried very hard to make my work life so miserable that I would quit. I stuck it out for almost two years, and in that time I guess she realized I wasn't quitting so she made up some lame excuse to her boss that I wasn't handing in my work on time to legitimize firing me.

I was very upset at the time but it turned out to be one of the best things that ever happened to me! When I was at the job, I didn't realize how it was taking a toll on my health and well being. Being fired gave me time to think and it also gave me a chance to reevaluate everything I was doing in my life to be able to make it better. Smile

He's actually glad to be leaving the company, but he's just upset because now instead of having a guaranteed paycheck until December while he hunts for jobs, he's now unemployed. I think he just hit a patch of good luck, though, as he's had several calls today about interviews for next week. So, yay!

I understand how it feels to miss those paychecks, but it sounds like his luck is getting better! Hope he finds a job soon. Smile

care really like to royally fuck you over dont they?

apparently i was a coke addict (someone decided to gossip about me, the information she received came from her cousin who worked with my then boyfriend)
apparently i used to come into work high. they could tell this because i worked too fast and ate.

???

i then apparently treated a client roughly and got angry at another oh and drove the mini bus erratically.
these statements turned out to be false.

when i tried to report an abusive situation previously no one listened. This was not taken into account. nor was the fact that our manager was being hauled over the coals for having a relationship with another member of staff...

basically i was let go and because they could not prove anything my record clean and they paid £300 towards legal bills...

6 months before this i was signed off due to mental health issues and since that point everyone was looking of a way to get rid of me. I was stripped of all responsibilty and wasnt allowed to continue with my NVQ

im never pouring my heart and soul into a job again unless i own it.

I technically got fired from my first job for asking if I should clock out or stay for overtime on my first shift.  My boss didn't speak English well and thought I was saying I would not stay, so he fired me.  Later, another employee explained what I was really asking and the boss apologized and asked me to come back.  I was pissed and told him I would never come back to work for him.  And I got a new job the next day lol.

Technically that is understandable by law. She should of brought her meds with her. If a fire had broken out or something and they were a astaff member short then that would be on the boss's head.. for example.

Walking out without premission is not really on. She should have tried to have someone cover her.. Or get another staff member to come on for an hour so she could go home.

I agree on her getting the job back and him being fired for being an ass.. But that could have all been prevented?

The closest Ive ever come to being fired was my last job... my boss knew that I was supposed to end working by a certain week, which I told him frequently.

THEN, one of the toads I worked with told him something different, and he took me off the schedule.  I was like "wtf... I didnt tell you to change my ending date..." and he just kinda shrugged it off.

No matter what I did, he wouldnt put me back on the schedule (I assume his annoying higher priority girls were asking for more hours), so eventually my blood pressure spiked and I just gave up, meaning I went the last few weeks of what was supposed to be my job with NO job, and no money, and nothing saved for when I went back to college in the fall.

this past summer i got an awesome job that i loved. the work was interesting enough at it was a good pay. too bad a week an a half later i got fired because the boss "Was too old fashioned" was all they told me when i got fired (oh did i mention they told me when i was in severe chest pain?) i later found out from my boyfriend (his dad is the assistant manager) that the boss didn't like my piercings. which was weird since someone else had about as many facial piercings as i had (one) and they wore more distracting jewelry in it than i did.

but oh well. it gave me enough money to go to skind that summer. so yeah. but it sucked majorly that i didn't have any money for books or to pay off the rest of tuition (like i would have had if i had gotten to keep that job)

also that boss is apparently a nepotistic asshole that nobody likes.
