God im posting a lot, but how many of you guys and gals out there would kill to have a tail? i know i would, it just seems a bit wierd that evolution got rid of ours.
I've heard that they are working on tail implants but these things arn't very likely to be happening within our life times.
I think we could geniticaly enginer ah person to be born with a tail, but that'd be pretty redundant for my needs ;)

What is this 'evolution' you speak of?

if at any point we had tails while evolving it is possible we still have the ability. with genetic engineering that gene could just be turned back on while in the womb, or so says the show i watched on the discovery channel about birds who no longer grow teeth and reptiles who no longer sport feathers. we may be a little more complicated than that though, but i'm not an engineer, haha.
i'm not interested in a tail, though. i remember ages ago someone posted wanting to give his submissive BDSM female friend a more permanent tail and i don't remember there being that many feasible ideas at this time.

haha think it would be a bit uncomfortable to lay down tho^^ i like laying on my back too much:))
actually, i just watched a health show about evolutionary left overs, and seems the tail is used for balance for creatures with four legs. call me retarded, but i would think having four legs you could better balance than two??

at the moment having a tail is impossible unless you were born with a elongated tail bone, there's a japanese man that has a 1 foot long tail i don't think he can move it, it's just there but it does look pretty groovy.

yeah... especially considering monkeys are bipedal and their tails are the most balance orientated...

no use having a tail with no function to me...i'd wanna swing from the trees like an ape^^
really is funny you bought this topic up tho- in this tv show they were just talking about how a very few people may still have a tiny visable bump...

well, wouldn't that be backward to evolutions purposes??
i guess our tails are gone for a reason:((
i vote for genetic modification as an answer:)) then you can look as freaky as you want (well, at least make your kids look as freaky as you want:P)

haha depends on how you look at it, i view autism as the next evolutionary step, i mean if you look at it autistic people are either amazingly smart or really strong, im thinking that evolution is trying to either split the human race into sub-species or is attempting to merge the two making us both smart and strong.

Um, you don't have a very strong understanding of autism, or evolution, do you? Less than 10% of autistic people have splinter skills, and autism does not have an effect on muscle development. Evolution works because the living creatures that are best suited to reproduce are most likely to pass on their genetic material. People with autism statistically reproduce far less frequently than those that are not autistic. It is also not yet known if autism is passed genetically.

i think you're being much to blunt here, look back at all the evolutionary mistakes that have been made, evolution doesn't go "ape - man" there are lots of little movements and little changes, autistic people can be very good at what they do you're just being to blunt on this which leads me to believe that you yourself don't understand evolution fully, now start using your own mind and not what you read in books.

I would love to have a tail! But I don't really see humans evolving to have tails. Unless they were better at surviving than people with no tails or if the majority of people were attracted to those who have little tails, that way it would be more likely for people in the next generation to have tails. Unless I'm totally dumb and I have no idea what I'm talking about, which is fairly likely lol

The only thing I've ever heard in regards to body modification and tails is Stalking Cat (Dennis Avner) wanting to get an animatronic tail attached to further his tiger transformation. Last I heard the project was still in the works and he didn't have any feasible method to attach it.

Hmmmm....despite the multiple kinky things one can do with a tail, I'd have to say nay-I have enough trouble finding jeans to fit my ghetto ass.

A tail would be so hot.. but so impractical, I wreckon we lost in through evolution cos we as a race like sitting on our asses too much.

I won't be dragged into a pointless argument with an uneducated person. Theories and opinions are important, but I'll base mine on science and fact, thanks. If you take offense to my assumption that you are uneducated, I assure you that I only make that assumption because of your complete lack of expression of knowledge of grammar and punctuation.

IMO the human species is already divided into subspecies, there are differences between people from different places over the world, large enough differences to talk about subspecies IMO, that often breed and create hybrids or different morphs/forms of our species. I find this fascinating and wonderful! Talking about this kinda stuff often gets people upset though, they call it racist and such while it's actually just the plain truth, we are different (and no is worth less or is better than anyone, I love all "species" of people)..

Tails?
Hmm
I can think of something, but it will not be moveable.
I want to transplant a patch of hair to the place where tails tend to be,
than let the hair grow, insert an device to stretch the skin, and change it for an implant.
No clue if something as crazy as this works, but would love to try, but have not found a person willing to transplant such patch of skin

I would love to have a tail personally. I remember some one talking about a mechanic that can be attached to your tail bone. He said something about moving nerve's to a certain location as well to make it move but I can't remember anymore, it's been a while since I last spoke to him now.

I'd quite like a tail depending on its capabilities, if i could use it to pick things up and actually have a purpose. I wouldn't want one if it was just pointlessly hanging there.

And yes, I am aspergian | Thanks for posting that link up inVivo, my sister is a fellow aspey and very proud of it. I'm sure she's familiar with the whole theory about it being the net step in evolution but as she enjoys reading material about aspergers, I've passed the link on :)

I would love a tail !!! I would find so many uses for it : pick things up, balance myself when jumping and dancing, use it as an awesome whip/sucker punch for annoying/bad people, use it to poke a cute guy/girl in a bus without them knowing it's me ; oh and use it as a method of transport as in Marsupilami (look it up it's awesome ) !! and it'd be fluffly !! Want TAIL !

Chimps feet are very well suited for climbing trees. Walking and running on flat ground they're not for. You would rather find out, that wish cripples you, if it would be fullfilled. At least if you don't go back onto the trees.
What's evolution doing with us - so which kinds of changes are selected over the time of 100ds of generations?
Brain... intellignce... cunning hands as tools... Vocal cords and mouth well suited to talk - to do very complex communication. By the way, Autism leads to crippled communication, so even extreme intelligence cannot be used....
And whats with tails?
Not only we lost them, also all the other closely related primates did so.
Chimps? Orang Utans, Gorillas...
Indeed the smaller, more distant apes have, and use the tail. Usually as 5th hand / leg. Imagine the increased weight of the closer relatives - this role of the tail is lost, and 4 arms for swinging in the trees quite sufficient.
No use = energy consuming ballast = lost
Now, we changed rules again, by stepping on the ground, going bipedal. now we have free arms, while balancing on 2 feet during walking and running. A tail would be rather helpful, but evolution is not famous for bringing back once lost things. Alternatives kick in, are selected.
So we have our large thumbless and very complex feet, giving excellent balance even unter really difficult conditions. And, while we are using our hands/arms for body language (another ancient task of tails) and working with tools, while running they do the balance, likewise a tail - or even better, as we have two of them, in high position. Disadvatage: This automatical move during running definitely overrides the use of the hands as fine tools during running.
