my piercer recommends Bactine. i haven't talked to anyone here who knows what provon/satin are. that's okay, though, because i've found something else that works really well. it's called dr. bronner's magical lavender soap or something. it has all these sayings about a non-denomonational inoffensive god all over the label. it's great. i got it at a health food store. you have to dilute it like crazy, and it's still a bit drying even then. but it's helped with the pain and swelling. i'd recommend it to anyone who can find it. |

Provon and Satin are a PCMX based antibacterial soaps, Chloroxylenol is the chemical in both. Tryclosan is the chemical in Dial Anti-bacterial. Bactine is a different product entirely. Bactine's active ingredient is Benzalkonium chloride or BZK, which is an infection preventative product. It also contains the pain relieving agent lydocaine Your best friend in the aftercare products group is definetly sea salt....if you are only gonna do one thing...it should be sea salt soaks |

Good call Adam. I recommend saline soaks aka sea salt soaks over soap anyday. I also personally like any anti bacterial soft soap, I have used it on several of my own piercings, as well as recommend it to my clients, and they haven't seen any dryness or irritation to the product. I dislike dial and dove soaps. I also don't really see the need for Bactine. XXX

Adam, You know so much about the chemical formulation of these products! I know anyone can simply look at a specific products ingredients to find out whats in them, but whats the best way of determining how they effect us?
I'm about to open a tattoo studio, however I want to make sure that the products I am recomending to my clients are the very best for their skin. I find that advice can be very subjective. How were you able to learn so much about chemical make-ups?

To be honest, I don't really see the need for antibacterial soap, I'm opposed to most kinds of soap anyway and antibacterial ones are the worst lol
I'd just stick with sss if I were you, and/or the LITHA method. Soaking my rook actually irritated it a bit, so I stopped doing that, just softening the crusties in the shower and wiping them off with a wet q-tip afterwards, and it's doing much better since. |
