Well, you could get the nail removed and podiatrists use a acid compound to kill the root. They insert it with a Q-Tip, it burns like fuck, so I hope you're a masochist...

This will enable the nail to ever grow back...get some more info on it first, and let an actual podiatrist do it, if you choose to have this procedure done.

hmmm nice idea.....sounds great metalic (maybe titan) fingernails,  maybe posible if: all is sterile, and welldone; you need at first perfect prothesis  than some kind of anchor which will hold the protheisis nail in the flesh....maybe some kind of bonekonektion...and then you have to seal the space between the skin and the "nail".....and then if you´re lucky all will heal and you have stylish and long lasting Titan nails....but...i think they might iritate you for a long time untill you learned to handel with them!

......i should work on  this idea for a while sunds .......interesting......hmmmmm

I would think that would cause a wicked nail fungus.  You could always get tips and get a metallic finish?

There was one guy in the Star Wars books who had them-he was a total sadist.  It was pretty cool.

Well I'm gonna get a tattoo of a BUTT, with a BUTT-shaped tattoo on it, and I'm gonna get it right on my BUTT. That would be cool.

no.  silly idea.  won't work, sorry.

you can kill the nail, but other than doing a nice bone graft there would be no way to properly anchor the nail in place.  and there would be no guarantee it'd ever heal.

If you remove the nail, and it happens not to grow back you'll still have to deal with the underlying skin growing up and toughening.

That's what happened to my dad's ingrown toenail that got removed.  The nail never grew back but he's got a wicked case of toughened skin and fungus that grows on it.

It's gross.

find someone that works in a sheet metal fabrication shop to make you some finger nails out of a lite ga.polished stainless steel .they can be polished to look like chrome then you could expose them on. they could be form to just slid over you fingers. (just a though)    I'm a retired sheet metal worker i have made thing  like this before.

Sounds like a wicked idea! ^^
I think the main issue wouldn't be removing the nail/regrowth of the nail, but actually anchoring the new nail in place somehow. Plus, fungal issues is definately a valid point. I imagine that having something like that over the area would create warmth and moisture underneath the 'nail'. Perfect conditions for bacteria to grow. Gross =P. You'd have to saline it soak it like, every three hours man, haha.
It'd really have to be slid underneath the skin like a normal nail to sit properly... but I don't think that's likely to happen... you'd have to find a way of encouraging the skin to grow over those bits and a way of keeping the nail from slipping out.
It'd have to be done one or two nails per hand at a time too. Like, I imagine it'd really inconveneance you to have all of your nails painful and useless at once, have to heal them just a couple at a time. Considering the complexity of actually getting them to heal, I imagine this would be a very drawn out task and you'd have to be really dedicated.
I know it's not as good, but for now I think you might just have to stick with capping the metal pieces over your actual nail....
If you end up finding someone whose willing to give it a go, I'd experiment with a thumb first or something. Certainly don't rush into it and get all of your nails removed straight up! =P

Edit:
"If you remove the nail, and it happens not to grow back you'll still have to deal with the underlying skin growing up and toughening."
That may not actually be such a bad thing. Would lessen the fungal issue. =) So considering that, I'd say going about it properly might involve removing say a thumb nail first, letting it heal to that stage where the skin toughens and then deal with insertion of the nail.
Duh, I didn't even consider that the skin would toughen like that, was just imaging it to stay like the squishy flesh under your finger nails OMG!. Now I just sound stupid, heh.

Wouldn't rust and/or tetanus possibly be a risk as well?
