ok, heres the situation, one of my best friends (cindi) wanted me to see her first"real" tat. unfortunately, she went to someone who is just starting out, needs portfolio building material. Is starting out at a shop next month. Her friendship is utmost importance to me, and she was scared to show me her new ink.

my sweetheart (chris) was concerned about me seeing Cindi's new ink, as he knows I have kinda high standards. Chris has spoiled me rotten with making sure I had good ink, and footing the bill for it. the ink I have is amazing (have been told this on numerous occasions, not trying to be a snob, just stating the facts here) ( and i state that with hesitation knowing the calibre of people that will read this post). So I go to cindi's and see her ink, chris coached me, saying, comment on the positive of whatever you can find in her new ink. i guess she was scared to show me her new ink, just knowing i have very high standards in this department. i made over her ink, the coloration is solid, the rest is debatable. i didnt let on to any of that. my opinion is: if you are going to get a mirror image tribal design, least that can happen is both sides mirror each other, this one unfortunately doesnt. but i didnt let on to cindi this was the case....

so how do i handle it when i see cindi at work. it looks like two designs glued together. hell, the artist was just starting out, and all i can think of is the motto: " good tattoos are not free, and free tattoos are not good"....

she is one of my best friends, she was scared to show me her new tat. i looked at it and took a pic of it with my cam phone, i ooohed and aaahed over it when i was with her, once i got home and looked at the pic loaded on my pc, i see many mistakes. i know that everyone has to start out somewhere, but i dont know what to say regarding this, hell, i am a tattoo snob, aren't i? is it, i expect high calibre work from all tats? i know, i know, everyone has to start somewhere, but ugh, i guess her new tat is not REALLY that bad, but what does everyone say when approached on a tat that clearly is not really good, but you are friends, and you dont want to hurt their feelings or damage their thoughts on their newest tat? i need opinions here friends

I don't see anything wrong with realizing that somebody got a "bad" tattoo. It's your right to pass judgement, but never hold yourself in higher regard.

its hard to say it but some times it needs to be said so that she dosent end up with another one like that. i now i have some bad work on me and i had a hard time hearing ppl say it was bad till i had a realy good tattooist say it . i still love it and would never change it and will go back to them for another i will just make sure that it easyer for them to do.

Well I am a snob too I just do it secretly, I know my goldfish aren't done very well and need them to be corrected..plus i have found some people love their tattoos even though some (or even most) people would say they are bad.
However, at looking at your page, WITH NO OFFENSE
its not like your tattoos are absolutely amazing either.
They are good, but if you want to really be a snob and critic, your tattoos wouldn't be up to par with some work that has been done.
I hope that doesn't come off bad..I am just saying if you were to take most tattoos to the hierarchy of some of the work that has been done most tattoos would def not rate up there.

I really say don't critique, your not an expert or an artist. Just because you have a few tattoos doesn't make you a good eye for them. Say its a good first tattoo.
If your friend tells your she is afraid of asking your opinion, thats really bad on your part. So her tattoo has some mistakes.
Its not right for you to say bad things about them.

If I got a dollar for every time I repented the sin then committed the same crime, I'd be standing on top of the world today...

If she was scared to show you, she probably could tell you were only pretending to like it, I wouldn't worry too much about her "finding out" you don't like it.

You've got some really beautiful tatts (like the peacock, wow) but you also have one or two i personally think are a bit average and could have been done better. I'm not trying to be critical, this is just my opinion and I normally keep my mouth shut because I know how much people's tattoos mean to them, and how shitty I'd feel if I got one and people said it was ugly.

What I'm really trying to say is that I think most tattooed people have some that are not beautifully done and it's OK, especially their first tattoos, the best thing you can do is try to guide your friend in the direction of a GOOD tattoo artist next time. Get her a good tattoo as a birthday present or something.

Some good points raised, and I agree with Euphoric and Luisa.

Also, this friend has this ink on their body for life, and putting the tattoo down could make her feel pretty bad about her body. As long as she is happy with it, that's all that matters.

And for the record, I have some baaaaad ink, but I also have some pretty awesome stuff too. You live and learn.

This isn't about her tattoos and if you think they are good or not.
She's asking for advice, not to be told her ink isn't good enough.

i think it's hard to come by someone who hasn't got at least 1 so-so tattoo, and usually it's one of the first tats they'd have gotten done.

i think you should examine the tattoo well and list the good things and the bad things of it, and next time the topic comes up, tell her that you like so and so, but you think that so and so could've been done much better. explain that tattoos CAN be re-worked most of the time, so she could consider to have it touched up once it heals up completely. and suggest a better tattooist to her?
