My friend wants to get microdermals in place of a sternum piercing, but in about a year she wants to get a chest piece started and we thought that for the sake of the tattoo it would be easier to take them out and get the tattoo finished, then have them redone.
So what I want to know is, are they complicated or painful to remove? Do they scar? Will it be hard to have them re-done in the same place?

Personally, I prefer to put them through scar tissue (so as far as re-doing goes, I think it's good) but a lot of people don't, they find it too difficult. They will scar, but no worse than anything else, and the removal process is simple. Depending on your modifier, there isn't a "Best Way" as of yet, with any of it, since dermals are so new, everyone's just experimenting, but most cut a TINY bit with a scalpel, grab, and pull. Quick, easy, and almost painless.

Personally, i would get them done, let them heal, take the disks off, do the tattoo, put the disks back on.  Once the dermal is healed, the disk can be taken off, as long as you a) make sure it doesn't grow over, and b) remember to put the damn thing back on.... I rarely wear anything on my hips.

Thanks for the speedy reply :)

This sounds like a pretty good way to go but will the tattoo artist be able to tattoo right upto and surrounding the implant?

hard to say really.. I would suggest asking the tattoo artist that question. (show/explain to them, if they don't know, what it will look like with an "extension" or "healing cap" (i assume you're familiar with these?))

why not wait until all the tattoo work is finished before getting the dermals done?

Well that's a year and a bit away, and she wants to get pierced now :P

We're heading into the city tomorrow so we'll ask the piercer and later the tattoo artist which is the best way to go.

I would wait as well.  If she attempts to leave the microdermals in place during the tattoo, the process could cause them to reject.  If she has the microdermals removed to be tattooed, she could end up with scar tissue.  The scar tissue oculd affect the overall look of the tattoo, especially if an area is raised or depressed.  I still have a small "hole" where my microdermal was on my wrist, and I've had it out for about 6 months.

I had to get my dermal on the back of my neck removed because of work. I had only had it in for maybe 5 or 6 weeks max, and it came out pretty easily. I guess it depends on how long it has been in there.

It hardly hurt, just a little tearing feeling from where the skin was starting to grow through those little holes in the anchor. I doubt mine will scar, but id say she should definitely wait...

I would wait. I mean go through all that trouble because you dont want to wait?
And I feel her. I want chest micros too but I am pretty sure I want something tattooed on my chest.
So I am waiting.
I will prob take way more than even a year and half.
If I got a dollar for every time I repented the sin then committed the same crime, I'd be standing on top of the world today...
