![]() Topic: Ear Growth?Posted: September/11/2008 at 7:57pm |

So I've had my industrial piercing almost half a year now. Still hurts like hell to this day, and will probably take a million more years to heal, lol.
BUT, this is freaking me out slightly. I've had this small...growth...for lack of a better word, on my cartilage for the last two months or so. I thought maybe it was scabbing or something so I tried brushing it away, and it hurt like hell! Its quite painful most of the time, and I was just curious if anyone knew what it could be, and if I might have to take out my precious industrial bar! (Which I will almost anything to avoid having to do that. So here is a picture of this 'growth' and any help, advice or anything would be awesome guys! Okay, so apparently my picture is too big. I'll try posting on my journal. Edited by mod_sara - September/11/2008 at 8:00pm |

Hypertrophic scarring, very common with cartilage piercings. Try either some tea tree oil diluted 50% or aspirin pastes. You don't have to take out your piercing. Either of these home remedies should get rid of the bump in a few weeks to a month.

Thanks Carrie! Your always so helpful with me! :D
Aspirin pastes, can you pick those up at walmart, and what exactly is it? And does this mean I get to keep my industrial bar?! :D |

Yes, you can keep your industrial. This is very common with cartilage piercings, and also with nose piercings. It's caused by irritation of some sort and sensitive tissue.
Aspirin pastes are easy. Crush up a non-coated aspirin, add a little water to make a paste, and then apply it to the bump. Rinse off after about 5 minutes. Do this once daily. You should notice improvement within a week. |

I'm getting this a lot.
I find SSS really difficult to do...I've tried soaking a cotton ball with saline solution, and pressing it gently against the area but firm enough..and still nothing, a month on from my helix and nealry three months on from my tragus. I even got the jewelry changed on the tragus so the fistula is straight and it's a bit better, but what the hell :(

Try actually soaking the piercing by submerging it in a cup of saline... I know it's difficult and awkward but I believe it's much better than a cotton ball.
Anyways, one / three months isn't much for cartilage piercing, my rook is 3 months old (I think... I have a horrible memory for time spans & dates lol) but it still hurts & gets crusty if I sleep on it too much. |

Some people are more prone to the bumps than others. Sleeping on your piercings is enough to cause them, and there's not a lot you can do to avoid that. Just give it some time, the tragus takes about 6-9 months to heal and the helix takes about 9-12 months. As time goes by, the bumps may diminish on it's own. If not, you could always try the home remedies to help get rid of them. Quite often, sea salt soaks aren't quite enough to take care of the bumps. They can help for sure, but if you are constantly irritating the piercings further (like if you roll over on them in your sleep), the sea salt soaks can only do so much. It took almost 9 months for my ear cartilage to stop growing bumps every time it got irritated.

Oh wow, I didn't know this thread was still going. Lmao.
Well thankfully its all cleared up. I was going to start trying some of the suggestions but just got so busy with work. Then one day I went to check it, and it was gone. Just like that. No bump, no scarring, no nothing. It was weird. Lmao. Thanks for the advise anyway though guys! |

Lol yay.
I'm actually surprised it never happened to you before that. It happens to me all the time. So, I guess you're sort of lucky then? |
