okay so I need to have an MRI and wanted to know if I have to take my piercings out.
I have googled this, and come up with the fact that I do not need to take them out. but I just want some clarity on this. I have my nose, tongue, rook, and lobes. the MRI is going to be done for my left knee. any help is appreciated guys, thanks. |

What materials do you have in the piercings?
Honestly, wouldn't it be safer to take them out for a bit, get the MRI done, and then put them back? It can't hurt... |

I got an mri the other day, and they didn't even ask about my jewelry, and plenty was visible. I took nothing out, had a full mri with over 25 pieces of jewelry in....
Most body jewelry is NOT magnetic, and 316L steel is completely austinitic (non-magnetic) some nurses and docs don't know shit about and may ask you to take them out, and you would have to comply, but I am living fact that it causes NO PROBLEMS WITH THE SCAN Edited by MontanaPiercer - September/05/2008 at 4:14pm |

what type of material is in them? Stainless steel, titanium, etc?
The reason I'm asking is because I believe titanium is FAR less magnetic, and could possibly be okay, as long as only your leg was going in the machine... but with a fresh piercing... I can't really see you getting away without damage. What if you went back to your piercer and had some PTFE or Bioplast put in? Edit: Nevermind I guess. =P 'Tana has spoken. titanium and high quality surgical steel are both non-ferrous. if you're in question about the safety of a piece of jewelry use an acryllic or pyrex retainer. you should tell your doctor about them before the scan at least, because they will show up on the end product and may confuse the doctor when he sees big dark lumps.

well from what I've cam across while looking it up, as long as it's the implant grade stuff used, I should be fine.
which I am pretty sure I have all in me haha. I just wanted some other advice, or experiences. alright thank you, much appreciated! |

I would try finding a magnet and see if any of it is magnetic. If its not, you will most likely be ok, but if it is the MRI machine is so strong that it will tear your piercings right through your flesh. No joke.
Just make absolutely sure its not magnetic. I would test it to make sure. |

Man, I'm so jealous of your hospitals. 2 MRIs in the last year and both times I was told to take out my jewelry, the first one gave me a hard time over an acrylic retainer. On top of it all half my right hand is numb and I've lost some of my fine motor control, which makes removing and replacing the jewelry extra difficult (and the reason for the MRIs)
