    Posted: September/02/2008 at 2:42pm
So my Koi tattoo is the first one I've gotten with color, and I assumed the healing process was going to be different. Let me explain whats going on so maybe I can get some better advise...
I got the tattoo on this last sunday, and when I woke up on monday my arm was still extremely sore and when I felt it I swore somehow overnight I started evolving into some type of reptile. I didn't think too much of it and continued the aftercare process the artist had explained to me.
He said, NO A&D (which is what I've been told to use by other artists, but then again all my other tattoos are only black) and to use Curel lotion, lotion and wash three times a day. So I've been doing that.
I realize its probably the scabbing, but now my tattoo is very dark and not nearly as vibrant as it was when i got it done.
Now I'm worried that this aftercare process may be ruining my tattoo. I have heard that you shouldn't be using the lotion until about a week later, and A&D up until that point, and that my tattoo shouldn't already have the 'reptile feel.' Like I said, this is my first color tattoo so I've never dealt with this type of healing process before, Any suggestions?

keep using the lotion just when needed. so when it is dry. use thin cotes and rub it in really well dont glob it on. you have to let your skin breath. once the scabs fall off on there own so dont pick are scatch. the bright tattoo well be under neath.
You pick it i poke it!

Well it seems like its constantly dry, lol. So I'm assuming it is okay that I am using the lotion?

i am absolutely no pro but if its always dry perhaps you need to look at changing the lotion. i'm not familiar with the stuff you're using but i never had any scabs from my colours with using bepathenan...
just a general question- is it normal to need to wash it three times a day?
i've only ever specifically washed mine after the first sitting?

lotion is fine, but using some aquaphor would probably help you. it's what I give all my clients. Curel unscented is okay though.
I have titties.

Well thats what my artist said, I've always been horrible on aftercare, especially on piercings, but I've never had any problems. I'm using Curel for my lotion right now, but perhaps a switch wouldn't hurt. I'm just scared for my tattoo! Lol, I dont want this one turning out horribly.

The exact type of Curel I'm using is: Curel Continuous Comfort. Origional Formula. And are you able to find Aquaphor in the store?

if in doubt have your artist look at the tattoo and see what he/she says about it. you and your tattoo are both OK I've only used a&d on three of my tattoos for the first day i use the same kind of lotion you are using and no problems. the reason for washing your tattoo is to keep it clean and to keep bacteria from being trapped between the lotion and the tattoo so wash it at lest two x day. apply the lotion until your skin will not absorb any more lotion then wipe off any extra. if your tattoo seem dry later in the day add a little more don't leave any extra. all the scabbing and flaking  should stop in about a week are less. some skin types have a reaction to some colors of ink. i have trouble with red inks i seem to scab more with red ink. in about two are three weeks your tattoo should be healed then your tattoo will look like it did if not better then when you got it done. i
