I'm thinking about getting the nape of my neck pierced but I have a few questions. Does anyone have any examples or comparisons pain wise? Also does it cause difficulty dressing and undressing? And about how long does the healing process take?

My best friend had hers for two years, and I had to help her get her clothes on and off for the first week and I soaked it everyday for her. She wouldn't have been able to take care of it on her own because she couldn't see it and is pretty uncoordinated (like me).
The only other piercings she has had were two off center labrets and she said the nape was far more painful but she didn't cry or anything when she had it done, she just sort of made and "oh!" noise and then it was fine. |

My friend got a nape microdermal two weeks ago and she didn't feel any pain at all. I'm not sure how the aftercare / healing is going because I've been on a holiday, but I'll ask and let you know.

My nape work is slightly different than a normal bar (it's called a madmax bar, go look at my mods :P) but it's basically two nape bars in procedure at least...
My skin there was very tough and my piercer had difficulty getting the needle through me, but other than that it was pretty simple and not very painful at all really :)
Healing is a bitch though and I'm expecting mine to take at least a year to heal properly, with that taking longer and longer every time I catch my hair/clothes/random bits of crap on it. Which happens almost every day and does the piercing no good whatsoever.... I can imagine with a normal nape bar that would only be worse.
They can heal, but remember it IS a surface piercing.

oh yeah, i kept knocking mine all the time but it actually healed quite easily initially.
i guess everyones different- mine only lasted a year and then it started to look crusty all the time and you could see where the bar was bent rather than just the balls so i took it out...but pain wise mine was the least painful of anything i've had done. i'd even go so far as to say the clamp hurt more than the piercing so i hardly felt it. |

my other half has had his mad max for a good 6 years and is still looking lovely and healthy. he had it done with the punch and taper method which when he performing nape piercings is his prefered method.

Thanks for all the input :) I think I've got pretty good answers to all my questions. Hopefully this piercing will be in the near future.

Get someone with experience to do it. I had a madison done with an Anatometal flat internally threaded surface bar with disks. That minimizes how much it gets hit. I also had it done "punch and taper", which felt like pressure.
I had my nape pierced with a shitty surface bar years ago, and it was clamped.. The pain wasn't that bad, it was a slower piercing, even with clamps, but it wasn't terribly painful. If you use proper jewellery, you should be able to keep it for years. Ask around. Anatometal surface bars are pricey, but definitely worth it! |
