That's the downside to using petroleum based products. On certain areas of my body, I break out really bad, even if I only use a minute amount. But it's a trade off, either I deal with the break outs for 3 or 4 weeks, or I stick to lotion and end up with thick scabs and uneven color. I would much rather have my tattoo heal beautifully than worry about the breakouts. What's a few weeks of ugly bumps compared to a life-long awesome tattoo?

What about natural stuff like shea or cocoa butter? It's nice and greasy but much better for your skin.

I have used Vaseline twice of of 7 sessions. Maybe I am just blessed with awesome skin, but I didnt break out once. I pretty much never break out, so maybe Im lucky. The areas where I just used water based lotion (Which my artist instructed me to do) crusted up, and I lost more color. The lotion areas still look good, but not as good as where I used Vaseline....I cant say it would be like that for everybody, but it was for me. The downside was that my shirt would get all greasy.
My best experiences though is with natural oil based products, like cocoa or shea butter or almond oil. |

i will stay with my lotion no matter what.as for vaseline you can't apply a thin enough coat so that your skin can get air. as for needing to use petroleum most of all lotions are a blend with a petroleum base.as for most shea or cocoa butter lotions are also of a petroleum base also. unless you can find either one in is pure form if you can try this. about 3 drops of lavender oil to 8oz.of either pure shea or cocoa butter.i've used a lot of this kind of home brew myself works great.the lavender oil is a natural antiseptic and pure shea or cocoa butter have no additives.

Vaseline and A&D Ointment don't work for me. They don't let my skin breathe so I don't heal so fast. I find Bepanthen best though it smells rank.

If you put a tiny bit on it and rub it in well, it could probably help.. but if you gob it on and leave it, it will trap bacteria and any dirt that comes that way.
Plain moisturizers are the way to go.. I've used A&D before, but I prefer "Udderly Smooth". |
