i agree with you 110% overgone2007 to buy your on laser and burn it off would not be very smart. i have a friend who is a dermatologist and she had to complete several  hours of training on how to use one and has to go back every so often for extra training.you just don't run out and buy one and have at it .your also looking at possible permanent skin damage. and beside all of the above your looking at spending several thousands of dollars for a laser to do the work right. this is more then 2cents worth so this is my 3 cents worth.

I had 22 laser tattoo removal treatments in Denver, Colorado Springs, Phoenix and Fresno.  I can say from so many laser treatments in so many different places that:

- Lasering works well to remove black and white.  Orange and green are almost impossible to remove.

- Lasering actually BURNS the skin.  The light impulses are so strong you can actually feel shock waves through the area, and smoke often comes off the skin.

- Lasering has to be spread out over a long time.  Many dermatologists say no more often than once every two to three months.  That makes paying for it a little easier to take, too.

- If you are lucky, you might be able to to negotiate the cost.  Mine was all on the head of my Penis, and the ladies at the clinic in Fresno decided they liked doing me, and declined to charge me anything at all for treatments.

- Lasering hurts.  Much more than the original tattoo.  You might want to apply some topical lidocaine ointment an hour or so before going in.  Cover it with saranwrap or a plastic baggie, so the lidocaine can be absorbed and not rub off.

there is more than one standard of tattoo removal laser.  i know of a lady in houston named whitney broach who gets a new laser every couple weeks to try out.  she has several types to choose from, and usually only uses the experimental ones on actual tattoo artists.  we refer a lot of people to her, she gets business, we get better prices, the lazers get tested.  some leave bad burns and some leave no scarring at all.  most professionals will offer some form of skin numbing agent, but it depends on the individual.   some colors are extremely hard to get out, and some come out easily.

Check out http://www.fadefast.com/
Your best bet is to lighten it a bit, that'd be really hard to cover up.
Lasers are very dangerous and shouldn't be operated by anyone but a professional. Black is the easiest to remove I believe. It's apparently really painful. EMLA is over the counter (in Canada) but it only lasts for about 30-45 minutes... check out www.bodyartpro.com if you want a topical anesthetic. I've heard the 4% lidocaine stuff is great, its expensive, but works well.
Or go find a really good artist.

Here is an example of a tattoo that was lightened and then covered:
