I've always admired the traditional images of Buddha, such as this one:

More and more, I think I'd like to get a tattoo kind of like the Buddha above. I've researched into it a little bit, and pictures play a huge role within the Buddhist religion; as far as I can tell, it's only offensive to have a Buddhist related tattoo below the waist.

I definitely do not want it below my waist line, but still, I'd be worried that it would seem disrespectful on my part to have such a tattoo when I am simply an 'admirer' and not a follower of the religion.

What do you guys think?

Glimmi says: But yeah theres that old saying you can't judge a book by it's cover, cause it could have like 60 piercings in it's cock......Well that's not how the saying actually goes but you get my point.

You can be a lover of Buddhist art without following the religion. I have several religious tattoos purely because of my love of their aestheticism.

Look how many people have Celtic knot-work, how many do you think are true Celts?

gingekinger raised the point there, and pretty much hit the nail on the head.

as long as the tattoo design itself is no offensive. the tattoo should not be perceived as offensive, you may possibly get the odd person who thinks your silly, or cannot grasp the reason why you did it and take offense. but that's nothing to worry about. You will get asked if your a buddhist alot no doubt.

remember your not allowed to look on buddha's eyes :) (or record??)

No way would I do that, one because that is without a doubt completely disrespectful, and two, I want the tattoo because I think that the Buddha is beautiful.

If I were to get it, it would be something like the image I posted, and probably located in the centre of my back.

I think the different images of the different are all beautiful pieces of art, and I agree with MistahG, think of how many people have tattoos that have nothing to do with their culture.

I'm reminded of the phrase "Imitation is the highest form of flattery"

I myself have his image on my left calf.... just FYI......it all depends on what tradition of Buddhism you follow as far as the sense of disrespect of the placement of the tattoo. Only in the Hinayana and Mahayana traditions are the symbol of Buddhas below the waist considered disrespect and explicitly said so in teachings. The Theravada tradition never says anything of the sort in any texts and a lot of monks from this tradition tattoo his symbol, prayers or even the sacred wheel onto peoples calves. In the Tibetan tradition, however, tattoos are generally seen as taboo all together and they see any likeness of the buddhas or their prayers as disrespect, which puts out the monks who tattoo from all the three other traditions.

Some people will see it as cultural appropriation.

"A more common sort of cultural appropriation in the body modification world is the theft of the iconography of another culture. Obvious examples includes tattoos of Hindu gods, Polynesian tribal iconography, or even Kanji tattoos by privileged white people from America who have no real understanding of the meanings behind these symbols. By turning them into nothing more than "something that looks cool" they not only make themselves look foolish, but offer a slap in the face the group they stole from." - BMEZINE.

But in my eyes as long as you have the cultural knowledge and appreciation about the piece you are getting to back yourself up i think its fine.
" Pumpkins scream in the dead of night
Trick or treat till the neighbors gonna die of fright
It's our town, everybody scream
In this town of Halloween."

i dont see anything wrong, i dont really consider buddhism a religion but a way of life as buddha seems to be more of a rank and they dont worship some sort of creator god, the belief is abut living a good life and being a good person, if you have a tattoo to comemorate it then i dont see how it could be offensive, like bubbles said as long as you have knowledge and not doing it just to be cool, then kanjis, gods, buddhas, ect are just fine, i have kanjis, but they mean something to me and i know there meanings, i also have koi, but i know what they represent but all in all, what matters is what you like
Ah ha-ha, chess. The ancient contest of wits. Two opponents: mano a mano. Braino a braino. And look: magnets for ease of travel. You could play chess on the moon.
