Dear Motherstuff...

I don't know if you have some knowledge about what music is, but music has a lot of things in common with maths or chess. Harmony, rythms, all this is purely mathematical.

The ability to get a hig level in maths or chess (I am not too bad in those two things by the way) is linked both to the amount of work you've invested in AND (this is where it becomes interesting) to what I'd name your abstraction, visualization, or imagination level. Same thing goes in music : people listen to what they are able to (culturally and intellectually) understand, no more no less.

I don't talk here about the style you'll listen to. You can find good, interesting music almost in any style. I don't listen much to pop music, but Pink Floyd for instance makes real music (Money, for instance, is in 7/4, and it's really not easy to build a valuable, working musical theme with such difficult rythms, not even talking about the "musical" instruments used to create this song...).

So "what I define as music others might think its crap to" ... well Mister, I think you're not exactly getting it. I'm not saying that his music is crap BECAUSE I don't like it, I'm just saying that it's crap because it's idiot, iterative, empty from rythmic, harmonic and poetic point of view. That's what some people call music for the masses.

Some people won't be able to understand such simple notions at school such as Thales, Pythagore... chances are high that those people won't need much to bring their ears to an extatic point. I will need more, much more. Some people will need even more than me (I have two friends who make their living composing music, and both listen to things that are simply beyond my understanding ... Pierre Boulez, Alban Berg to name some).

If you don't believe in what I say, then ... just think about what you were listening to when you were 3 years old, 5, 8, 11, 15, 20, 25 and so on... would you listen to what you were listening to in the past? In most cases, the answer is no, because you, as a human being, are evoluating, moving forward, and needing more. Because, as I told you before, your "level" in music, understanding level, is both linked with your imagination and with the amount of music you've listened all life long (listening to music is exactly like practising math exercises).

I don't listen to Jazz because I don't love jazz. But I'm still convinced that in most cases, jazzmen are producing music, good music. I'd never say it's crap, because despite of the fact that I don't love the style of that music, I can see clearly that the harmonic, melodic, rythmic forms of jazz are very, very rich.

I'd also say that in most cases, country music is pure shit. Even worse than music for the masses, it's music for the rednecks. But even there you can sometimes find some authentic artists like Mark Knopfler from Dire Straits who's been producing some of the most nostalgic and beautiful songs from 78 to 85...

"See I have never heard of any of that music you list or even think I would even listen to it."

Should I be impressed ? May I ask you if you are simply deaf or just close minded ?

Pseud, I wasn't criticizing anybody, just saying that calling that music was really giving way to much credit to it.

That's cool, and I'm not trying to start any argument. I think you're original post just came off a little harsh...or atleast it was easily misinterpretted as such. I think we can all agree that "The Game" makes shitty "music"...or whatever you'd like to call it.

See your not reading what any one is typing.

First off your post came off harsh and brash and attacking in manner, and so is this one I am quoting from.

For one thing, Dire Straits is no where near being country. With that said lets move on.

I understand you feel your better then me because you listen to classical and I listen to "redneck crap". But you know what, to each there own and I will not go out and bash and be attacking in manner to some one because they listen to some thing I do not like. I for one do not like rap, but then again I would not knock some one for listening to it.

My choice of music is of no matter, but if you must know, I prefer classic "country", bluegrass and Cajun style music, Cajun is Louisiana style of music and I do listen to a lot of old school Thrash and Heavy metal. But then again to you this is all crap.

I for one never criticized classical, but then since I do not listen to it, it seams that I am a closed minded idiot for this to you anyhow. You don't know me, nor will or would we ever meet in person, for I would not associate with some one that has the gal to call some one a closed minded idiot for there style of music they listen to.

And you say I am the closed minded one, sure, I am not the one that feels they are better then others because I listen to what I feel is a better style of music, hmmm to judge some one for there music choice, wow, sounds like your being the close minded one to me.
