I haven't tried a finger web/hand piercing, but I have heard that they are a HUGE pain in the ass to heal because they can catch on everything, and generally end up rejecting.

Not very many reputable piercers will do these piercings as they hardly ever heal. I wouldn't want my name associated with such a piercing

I have the right and left index/thumb web done, and yep, the bastards catch in everything, left one is healing fine, but I suspect the right will need to come out soon enough (I am right handed)

back in the 90s they were kind of in vogue amongst the more modified brazilians, fact is many of them now have split hand webs, take a wild guess as to why

as for transfinger: that is an experimental piercing, don't hear anyone on it except someone who has done it or someone who has/had it

I had my index/thumb web done about 6 months ago, it's healing beautifully. In the first few months it migrated deeper, which is a great sign I assume. I'll see how it continues to go. I've still been soaking in non iodized sea salt 3 times a day for 30 minutes, as well as constant hand washing on a scale that would embarrass the most over zealous germaphobe. Even at the beginning I had little to no puss and the curved barbell could move freely within the first few days. I attribute the bulk of the success to taping the tips of my fingers together. Yes it hinders life, but for anyone considering this kind of piercing, it should dramatically increase the chances of it taking. This piercing hurt far more than my frenum even, after the pain it's definitely worth taking proper care of. Hand webs are a fucking commitment

Think about, there is a higher risk for infection, and quite a lot of movement on the piercing. So what you are doing with your hands in all day life does matter.
