Can anyone recommend some good books on body art?
I am looking for books on tattoo, piercing or scarification for the purpose of learning about the origins and meaning of different styles of body art.

The styles I am most interested in are;
-Traditional Japanese
- Maori tattoo
- Tribal tattoo and scarification
- Anything at all on ancient tattoo culture or practices
- Face tattoos

I would also love to find anything that is picture book style just to flip through. If not books I would love to hear of some good, reliable websites with information about different styles when/where they started.

I have been looking online but I would rather hear from someone who owns or has read some good books, so I'm not wasting my money and finding out after I buy something that its full of shit. Any input is appreciated!

I'm looking for stuff about gang and prison tattoo as well, I think there are a few documentaries that touch on this subject but I don't know where to start looking.

Mau Moko by Te Awekotuku Ngahuia is supposed to be a good historical reference for Maori tattooing. I haven't read it yet (it's on a long list of books to buy) but the fact that it's widely stocked in New Zealand is possibly a good sign.
