Lately I've noticed an increase in trendy/popular tattoos. This includes but is not limited to: koi fish - waves & lotus flowers, sparrows, cupcakes, crows, single feathers, etc.
To be honest, I'm not a fan. I think tattoos should have personal meaning and original design to them, but I won't hate on anyone's ink because it must have been important enough to put money and time into it.
I want to see opinions on the subject. Yay or Nay?

It annoys me that people wear popular designs of clothes. Unless each and every garment you wear has an intricate personal story attached then it sickens me to the core.
No aspect of a person's appearance should have any concession to general culture or the aesthetic tastes of the society they live in.

If tattoos have deep meaning for you... great, but be wary of projecting that value system on to other people...

their design motivations are really none of your business

No worries guys, I am in no way trying to convince everyone that each tattoo should have meaning. For instance, my piercings are for my own aesthetic purpose. Some of my friends have some of the tattoos I described and I like them just fine.

I was simply curious about the permanence of it all. Perhaps I should have stated my question more clearly. My question should have gone like this, "Does anyone regret getting a tattoo that a lot of other people were getting at the time?"

Sarcasm in unnecessary, but I see what you mean. I had never really thought of it that way.

It is a fun way to make a point without starting an arguement.
Plenty of people regret tattoos they chose only for fashion. However one can choose a design based on popular contemporary tastes without it being for the sake of fashion. Often things are popular because they are nice.

Having said that my tattoos are mainly weird designs with intricate stories behind them.

I have plenty of tattoos that have no personal meaning to them. I also don't regret them. I just thought they were cool designs, and they will always remind me of a certain time in my life. :)

How do you know those trendy tattoos don't mean something to that person? Personally, I find that koi and sparrows have been "trendy" for years and years.

Keiran1980: Good point, I guess there aren't too many ugly trendy tattoos.

Cale: That why initially I said that it must have meant something if they put the time and money into it. Unless they were hammered

And now that I have a broader look upon the subject, I could see that getting a popular tattoo might remind someone of their culture. I'm really glad I brought this up. I think it's good to see others' perspectives to help me develop mine.

most of my 20 something tattoos dont have any kind of deep personal meaning.   there is actually only 3 that really do.   like the lovely Cale said most all of them are designs that i like, and yes a few of them are probably very trendy.   I also happen to have a koi fish that covers the top of my left foot.
Look at you now hero

I wouldn't assume that a trendy tattoo has no meaning. My latest falls under a generic label that is definitely trendy - I spent some hours amusing myself googling the meaning of said tattoo and every site I looked at had comments to the effect of 'extremely popular.' It probably has the most meaning of any of mine, and it's directly related to the subject matter. It's well done, it's a custom design and it fits its placement, so it bugs me when people have a go at it purely because of the label it falls under.

I would also argue that anything people like enough to keep it around permanently has some kind of significance, even if it's just "I really like this image." Any reason is valid.
