Silly question time!! Smile

The one piercer that I usually see recommends doing epsom salt soaks as aftercare for a new piercing. Since I always use sea salt, it never really occurred to me that there might be a difference in the salts. Recently I was showing my friend one of my old aftercare sheets, and she saw epsom salt on there. Well, she freaked out, and said that the minerals in epsom salt are bad for the body if they make their way to the bloodstream, which they would in a fresh piercing. I know epsom salts are supposed to be added to a bath so they can soak into your body, but I've noticed that no one on here mentions anything about epsom salt, so now I'm worried. Is it true that it's harmful to a fresh piercing??

From the research I just did, epsom salts are used to help increase magnesium levels in the blood of people who have a deficiency.

It's just magnesium sulphate. I'm fairly sure that it's not poison. Wait for a pro though. They may know something that I don't know.

Medical doctors use it to treat skin inflamations and to relieve the symptoms of certain skin diseases (such as herpes). If you used a very strong solution it would act as a dessicant and damage the healing piercing, then again if you mix sea salt solution too strong it can cause significant harm.

I would not advise the use of epsom salts because they may cause some issues I can not forsee, however I do not think that they should sause major harm if used in a mild solution.

First and foremost Epsom Salt isn't even truly a salt, it's Magnesium Sulfate Heptahydrate and has no Sodium (salt).

Sea Salt contains many minerals that are essential to the human body, when properly mixed (1/4 teaspoon to 8oz bottled/distilled water), it becomes isotonic (same ph level) to the the human body.

Epsom salt is usually used in "baths" for muscle aches, but it's also in other products like deodorant, exfoliates , and lawn care products....not to mention that the box usually says it's good for muscle aches and pains, or as a saline laxative....else where it warns not to use on skin infections or open wounds and a piercing is an open wound.
SINcerely,

Juan

Here's the chemistry part
Sea Salt (Sodium Chloride) has a purity level of 98%, the other 2% is trace minerals. Depending on where the Sea Salt is from it contains up to 81 minerals that are essential for your bodily functions. When Sodium Chloride is correctly mixed with water (0.9% for piercing cleaning) it produces an isotonic solution. This means that it's Ph is identical to that of the skins.
Epsom Salts (Magnesium Sulfate Heptahydrate) on the other hand is extremely impure. You should never use it on an open wound, some Epsom Salts contain sugar which in turn can cause infections.

Some people think epsom salt is the same as sea salt.

A salt is any ionic compound formed by the neutalising reaction between an acid and a base.

Sodium and salt are not the same thing. Sodium is a metal. Like gold, tin or iron.

Every salt does not have to contain sodium, just like every animal does not have to be a dog.
