How do you guys decide what (kind of) tattoo to get?
I know this question is rather vague. I know that people get tattoos for very different and very personal reasons, I am not asking WHY you get a tattoo... but in the end, how do you decide how exactly it has to look? How do you decide what style to get, or how to depict the thing that has a certain meaning for you? I am currently (and have been for a while) trying to decide what to do with the tattoo on my upper back. I picked it out of a flash album when I was 18 and although it is well done and symmetrical and all, I now regret that I didn't think about it longer because it just isn't me. I want to have it covered / added to it to turn it into something that is more personal. Now I feel like I am overthinking the matter. I wat a tattoo that has personal meaning to me, that says something about who I am, but who am I? I feel like I hardly know myself. There is hardly anything that means a lot to me in life except some spiritual/immaterial values that are not related to any religion, so how would you depict those? I chose my first tattoo because I liked the look, but now I don't like the look anymore and there's nothing else about it to make it valuable to me anymore. So I don't want to get something that "only" looks nice, because my taste might change over time. So how do you guys decide? When are you sure enough that this is what you really want? |

Most (if not all) of the tattoos I have at the moment symbolise the happy childhood that I had. So currently I have a character from my favourite film growing up, my Dad's panther tattoo, plants and that remind me of the tomboy childhood I had where I would spend all my time climbing trees etc and even my mermaid related tattoos are from my childhood wish to be able to turn into a mermaid.
Most of my future tattoos will be along the same lines and my fish really express my love for the animals themselves and the calming nature they have upon me.
I have one tattoo which I am designing at the moment and that is an expression of the new found freedom I have found in the past year and my desire to revert back to the blissful happiness of my childhood
 As for style it's all down to my current drawing/paiting style of the moment. I have designed most of my tattoos myself so they are an exact indication of my current artistic style and ability. I quite like this way of doing this though as I get to keep an ever evolving portfolio of my own abilities on my body. I get a visual indication of how I'm growing artistically and as a person.

I have a similar view about my tattoos. First of all they are important parts of my live....they tell how I feel about certain things like my family.
The ideas come with the way of my life and will always remind me about that time when i got them. The style my tattoos are is the same like crystoth said, i designed them all by myself and in adition i like to have art from myself on my body =) |

Easy if its stupid and I like it it goes on my left arm with very little thought if I have the cash.
I'm sure I'll think about the rest of my body and make it look good but now its how much crap can I jam on my left arm! |

I give my artist and idea, and she hammers out the details. I almost always go w/ what she draws up 'cause she knows the best! But our interests are similar, so she always "gets" my ideas.

mine have been from pictures that i like and ideas in my head. i tend to let the artist do whatever they feel looks best!
