We, as piercers, hit veins all the time, and while yes these veins do tend to bleed a lot when you hit them if pressure is applied the bleeding stops within a couple minutes and they heal up just fine. You do not have to avoid the veins, this is a myth. Also many people have the exact same veins but deeper in the tissue so they are not visible on the surface.
