My friend has also gone from 1/2' to 14ga. I guess it all depends on how well you take care of your ears and how your skin reacts to stretching because I also know someone who went to an 8 and they've left their jewelery out for MONTHS and you can still see through their ears.<span style="font-size:10px"><br /><br />Edited by MrGlass - November/07/2008 at 11:46pm</span>]]>

It sounds a bit odd but if I'm ill and I take them out to clean they can shrink pretty quickly but other times they've been really loose and nearly dropped out. I've never really thought about downsizing unless my lobes got a bit thin, I guess I've gone past the point of no return but it doesn't bother me.]]>

There are a few things you can do to help them close up. I personally wouldn't reccommend going past 4ga if you were to worried about it. I had my ears dermal punched at a 0ga and kept them in for about 9 mos before taking them&nbsp;out. My ears closed completely.]]>

I had mine that size for three years, whilst wearing no proper jewellery in it.
