The Cupcake Tattoo
I think this is posed more as a really long question than a featured article, but nonetheless, I think it should be brought to the attention of the collective conscious rather than the unconscious as it appears to be.

Over the last 12 months or so, I've been noticing a new "cool" tattoo, that I'm hoping someone can help me shed the light on. What's with the cupcake tattoos?

Is there something that I'm missing, or is it just that cupcakes are considered cool and cute? Please forgive my ignorance on this, I don't hang out with cupcake-liking people too much. Is this a sign of me getting old, or not "with it" anymore?

The thing is that it tends to be more than just a plain 'ole cupcake. I've noticed a plethora of different types of cupcake tattoos, but there tends to be a division between two sides that I see.

We have the "cute" cupcakes on one side and then we have the "evil" cupcakes on the other.

Here are a couple examples of the cute-cupcake team:

Now for the other team, we have the "evil" cupcake tattoos:

Then there's the pirate cupcake crew. I'm not sure where the skull and crossbones cupcakes fall. Maybe they're the mediators between the good and evil... pillaging as needed:

So can someone help me out on this? I mean, it obviously goes farther than "I like cupcakes". I mean there's a few people on here where the word "cupcake' is even part of their name! If you're going to incorporate a pastry into your name, you gotta be pretty hardcore about that particular tasty treat!

When I ran a search on here, I found 55 people with it in their name. Here's a couple of people that I found on here that are fans of the cake in a cup: roxycupcakes (Louisiana), cupcakekiss (California), gothiccupcake (Tasmania), daintycupcakes (Kansas), cupcakexcore<

Now I feel like consuming evil cupcakes...

honestly, I think it's just that cupcakes are delicious. and the girls that get them might think "oh well, I'm awesome and delicious, i'll get a tattoo of one!" ONe thing that I've observed working around a bunch of really trendy military tech-schoolers is trends. Every couple of weeks they cycle in and out of training, therefore I get to see trend cycles, fast paced. Cupcakes were one of them, beginning with the one I did up in the collage of them up there, which makes it kind of ironic. I did that on someone in the military, and then all of a sudden we had about 10-15 cupcake tattoos within the next month. I think it all comes down to "that's cute! I want one!"

Sorry for the long rambling post, I just woke up.

Don't alot of guys have the pet name "Cupcake" for their woman??? I know I've heard it quite a bit around here in WI.
Posted on March 9, 2009 (12:44pm)
Hmph, hasn't anyone ever called you a cupcake? Well, maybe that's a bit too girly nickname. Haven't you ever called any girl a cupcake? ;)

I've seen A LOT of cupcake tattoo requests within the last nine months. I don't mean to offend anyone, but I'm seeing them as a Tasmanian devil/tribal "tramp stamp"/butterfly/rib (ho-handle...)-type phenomenon. Our artists frequently talk to their clients about what their tattoos mean to them. I've not heard anything substantial about these tasty little treats in our nook of the world, yet.

1. Adam, your still with it, dont worry!

2. Cupcakes i think have just become common ink.. I think its just a phase. From some i have seen they look awesome. Same as any ink. I know Old Skool style Ink has a bigger range, its still common, and people still love it.

the first person i saw with a cupcake tattoo , was jeffree star . but im not sure if he started the trend or not .

i'm feeling the love for the cupcakes. i've been currently obsessing over opening my own cafe and if i end up going through with it in the next few years, i very well might be getting some homemade cakes tattooed on me. mmmmmmm.

Personally I think it's a "scene" thing. Kind of like teased, choppy hair and skinny jeans. This fad, too, shall pass.
Posted on March 9, 2009 (4:20pm)
Go cupcakes! Some of them look pretty rad.
Posted on March 9, 2009 (5:06pm)
I want a cupcake. Bake me a cake!!
Posted on March 9, 2009 (5:24pm)
I never actualy noticed the cupcake crew till I got my own..and I thought I was being original as well :P
I have mine cause my dad calls me cupcake, so when I see mine it makes me smile. Not really a deep and profound meaning though
plus, cupcakes are damn tasty.
Posted on March 9, 2009 (5:26pm)
my best friend has a cupcake tattoo... i like it but yeah it's becoming a fad...i would do it anyways
Posted on March 9, 2009 (5:54pm)
I personally don't like the cupcake phase. They sprung out of nowhere and now everyone is getting them. I can't see why someone would want an item of food tattooed on them. But, I don't want a backlash, it's my opinion and I'll never knock anyone personally for having this tattoo, I just personally don't like it.

I think its sort of an emo kid thing. Personally, I think some of them are adorable though! The ones with the little faces aww. I like cute little colorful things though so I'm not minding the cupcake trend ;)

I liked French Toast tat a couple weeks ago. That was rad. The mustache and beret were hilarious...makes me laugh just thinking about it.
Posted on March 9, 2009 (9:26pm)
I think its just because they are super cute, colorful, and tasty. And as soon as i saw a girl with a cupcake tat, i did a girly squeal, and wanted one of my own.
Posted on March 9, 2009 (9:38pm)
hmmm... I never noticed the trend til now.
Posted on March 10, 2009 (3:01am)
I'm planning to get a cupcake tattoo... but mine will actually have some meaning behind it... I'm in the process of becoming a fitness personal trainer and therefore can no longer consume the tasty little devils.... also I am mildly allergic to refined foods so this way I can have one without eating it... :P (even though I want to)
Posted on March 10, 2009 (2:19pm)
Maybe its just because ink can be so...man-ly if that makes sense, and a tattoo of a cupcake is sweet and girly, so a girl can get the tattoo without feeling so masculine? Just a guess
Posted on March 10, 2009 (2:28pm)
I want a cupcake...my nickname is cupcake and I also have a degree in pastry arts. I'm not sure I will always be called cupcake but I will always have the deep love of making cakes. I , of course, will do something to make it a unique cupcake.
Posted on March 10, 2009 (6:41pm)
I think it's just because it's a cute girly thing to have...and as for the evil/pirate cupcakes, it's either a bit of irony (an evil cute thing) or a bit of fun. (a tasty baked product that pilages the seven seas).
:)
I personally think they're cute. I'd never get one though, just because there's hundreds now. I'm an anti-trend lady, haha :)

lool your curiosity humors me. i think my obsession with the cakes of cup comes with the cuteness of them...and i used to always walk around quoting gir in high school (yes...invader zim...i know...). i just like them, they're cute and remind me of happy things...like fairy dust.
Posted on March 15, 2009 (11:09am)
I don't particularly like it, but I have seen some really cute artwork.
Posted on March 23, 2009 (5:41am)
I think they are cute =D Its my cup of tea but it is a lil cute symbol hehe.

The first cupcake i noticed, also mentioned by italy, was jeffree star. i feel its more a trend then it has a meaning.

1. cupcakes stand for sugarcoated baked treats that one can eat, like a mini cake
2. cupcakes are also a popular pet name among people
3. i feel deserts have been making a way into the media of whats cool, cause if you noticed the rap/r

therefore i feel its more of a trend among the people who follow the current media, that does it.

Ever think maybe some of these people are bakers, decorators, or pastry chefs?
Posted on May 19, 2011 (9:09pm)
I want one and it's because I am a baker/decorator, I also read thru some posts online and a lot of these girls had sentimental reasons for getting them, either way I believe what u put on your own body is ur business and no one else's opinion should matter or affect u!! : P
